This is a tool that connects healthcare facilities, providers, and medical device and equipment suppliers across Canada to share excess medical devices and related equipment with those in need.

The purpose of this site is to

  • Connect healthcare providers across the country in times of product shortages
  • Find users in the country for excess medical devices so that we utilize products within the country
  • Divert excess product from landfill

No medical devices are bought or sold on this website. People in need are connected with those who have extra. Transactions occur offline, per usual channels. Products can be borrowed, sold, or donated.

Medical devices offered must have valid MDLs and suppliers of medical devices must have valid MDELs.

Use Cases:

  • Hospital X has run out of a certain graft with an incoming patient in need of the item. They cannot obtain any from their supplier. Hospital X posts on the ”Urgent Dashboard" to see if they can borrow or buy from another facility.
  • Supplier Y has almost new demo equipment for sale at low prices and is looking for a buyer. Supplier Y posts the offer on the Dashboard.
  • Hospital Z has renovated and would like to find a user for their barely used storage cabinets. They post their offer on the Dashboard.
  • Hospital W has switched protocols and is not able to use up their leftover products. They post the offer on the Dashboard.

Facts And Information

A Johns Hopkins research team reports that major hospitals across the U.S. collectively throw away at least $15 million a year in unused operating room surgical supplies that could be salvaged and used to ease critical shortages…

Many players are involved in the health product supply chain, including manufacturers, distributors, importers, health care organizations, community and hospital pharmacies, and retailers. Each has a role to play and has deep knowledge about their part of the supply chain, but knowledge and understanding of other parts of the supply can be limited.
Improving everyone's knowledge about the supply chain and sharing this knowledge among everyone will help build resilience against shortages.

One of the reasons Canada is vulnerable to shortages is that it's a small market, representing only about 2% of global drug and medical device sales.

Many healthcare facilities already have a policy in place for surplus equipment disposal, and have the option to sell, trade, or donate to a third party.

Industry experts estimate that as much as 20% of an organization’s inventory can be excess and not moving. This includes medical equipment and supplies. Some products may have been aggressively procured or manufactured simply because they were over forecasted, or did not move for a variety of reasons.
